Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to examine primary and secondary data availability and use in business ethics research. An international sample of doctoral dissertations, primarily from the United States and the United Kingdom, starting from the year 1998 is explored and content-analyzed. The research topics, data collection and the availability of data are categorized. According to the results, the use of only primary data sources is increasing in business ethics research while there are methodological reasons to increase the use of secondary data. Using secondary data can reduce the cost of collecting primary data and enhance the conclusions derived from primary data.
