Abstract:It is hypothesized that the displacement effect is offset at least in part by complementary effects. For example computers may increase clerical and managerial employment by lowering unit costs, thus expanding production and including structural reorganization of the firm. Analyzing new data drawn from a national survey of computers in 1972-78 it is suggested that the employment of the clerks and managers was depressed substantially, but that the pattern of overtime - a larger displacement effect in the first few years, followed by increased employment later - supports the bureaucratic reorganization hypothesis.
