Abstract:Inflexibility of working arrangements in the majority of British organisations and the lack of suitable childcare facilities are major barriers to women getting into the economy and the labour market. Child-bearing career break is another barrier to effective employment of women. Balancing work and family life and more flexible work pattern, are two of the benefits to working mothers. Job sharing is another option. Flexible working hours can be combined with improvements in childcare facilities. The other obstacle, school holidays, could be overcome by setting up summer schools, Easter schools, etc. on a profit-making basis. Companies are going to have to take positive action to bring women back to work.
