Abstract:Drawing on wide range of empirical data, the authors consider the roles which organizations can adopt in managing supply networks. Organizations are able to manage supply networks if a broad view of management is adopted. Using role theory, the authors have divided the supply networks management actions in to sets of connected activities and objectives that constitute management roles in supply networks. Six different roles were identified: innovation facilitator, co-coordinator, supply policy maker and adopter, advisor, information broker and supply network structuring agent. The larger debates on meaning of management are combined to the discussion of these roles. Also the contribution of role theory and possibilities for managing inter-organizational networks are evaluated.
