Abstract:Based on a database from post-communist, pre-deposit-insurance Russia, this study demonstrates the presence of quantity-based sanctioning of weaker banks by both firms and households. Evidence for the standard form of price discipline is weak, though. The deposit supply function is estimated. It is shown that, especially for poorly capitalized banks, interest rate increases show diminishing, and eventually negative, returns in terms of deposit attraction.
