Abstract:Much of the appeal of UNIX for 1990s style client/server computing can be traced to the power of the X Window System. New software is appearing that gives PCs access to both DOS and X Window applications. Initial users seem satisfied, but performance constraints limit this option to occasional UNIX users. Instead, they had to opt for more specialized and expensive desktop machines, including workstations and X-terminal display devices. Now, however, more PCs can run the X Window System. A list of firms is presented who are now shipping or about to ship X server software for DOS, Windows and the Macintosh.
