Abstract:New line-sharing technologies that use existing phone lines promise to deliver the benefits of voice-data integration to small offices and home offices. Waiting at a cross street in Manhattan each morning for a bus that makes limited stops is always a trying experience. Eventually there comes a point when, after passing on five buses that make local stops, the author decides to cut his losses and take the next local bus, even though the limited bus speeds his trip and gets him to work much faster. Many companies face a similar situation when it comes to delivering voice and data to users at home, in remote offices, or on the road.
