Abstract:IBM's announcement of its Personal System/2 has met mixed reactions from both competitors and users. Some are impressed by its features. Others suggest that those very features imprison users in the IBM world. The PS/2 family as a system open to extensions and independently written application packages is characterized. But to make imitations of the PS/2 is time-consuming and costly, if not impossible, IBM has modified previous PC standards. The most important alternatives are described. The problems of competitors when trying to make IBM compatible hardware or software are discussed. Cases of communication incompatibility are mentioned.
