Abstract:Personal computers, particularly the new generation of 386 chip based machines, have become the vehicles of choice for expert systems development. As a result, a bevy of expert systems development tools and environments has emerged to meet the demand driven by the low cost and user autonomy that the PC provides. A list of examples is given. The advantages of PC-based expert systems are summarized. The needed quality of the software environment is characterized. The particular challenges for information systems management are highlighted. Information about markets and vendors is given. Connectivity of expert systems with different existing systems is dealt with. Some future trends are demonstrated.
