Abstract: | The relevance of the techniques of super sparsity, i.e. the need to use various data-compaction schemes, to the solution of sophisticated large-scale linear programming problems on modest personal computers is discussed. It is argued that these techniques are vital for the effective solution of medium- to large-scale linear programmings in limited-memory machines. It is also shown and demonstrated by a method that the computational overheads may be significantly circumvented using super sparsity schemes. The implementation of these ideas has enabled the construction of linear programming systems on personal computers that are capable of solving problems which would have been described as challenging on mainframes in the past. |
