| Abstract: | Irrespective of their type, portable computers are not just the subject of advertising literature. On the contrary, they are due to appear in the near future. Apart from the mobile application they come into view as a replacement for the customary personal computers and also as a prestige object. The development of different categories of laptops from 1979 to 1990 is reviewed. A number of application areas are discussed. The limits of laptop capabilities are considered. |
