Abstract: | The supercomputers are predicted to give way to a new set of distributed technologies built around workstations as the chief means of technical computing in the 1990s. According to the forecasts, by the year 2000, nearly all PCs will have the capability of today's supercomputers. Five options are suggested for alternative supercomputers or "supersubstitutes": mini-supercomputers, super-workstations, massively parallel computers, mainframe computers and workstations. It is suggested that super-workstations hold the most promise because they embody more leading-edge technologies. Moreover, the benefits of these technologies are readily apparent to users. |
