Abstract:Diskless workstations contain a microprocessor and 640 kByte to 1 MByte or more random access memory, and they run standard MS-DOS uses. However, unlike PCs, they are basically slaves to the networks, and most products include built-in network connections. Due to data disaster stories and to responsibility for networks security, several information system managers are seeking the security of diskless workstations. But not every user will want to go diskless anytime soon. The most important feature with these machines is data security, and they are much cheaper than their PC equivalents. Three types of diskless devices are described, and a list of manufacturers producing diskless workstations is presented.
