Abstract:This paper aims to examine the interplay btw. outward knowledge transfer (hereafter as: kn-tr.) and entry mode in foreign subsidiaries (here as: subs.) of multinational companies (as: MNCs). The focus is on kn-tr. from subs. established either through acquisition or as greenfield investments. It is argued that outward kn-tr. is likely to be greater from acquired subs. rather than from greenfield subs. In addition, it is also explored how the length of time that a subsidiary has been a part of the MNC impacts outward kn-tr. The empirical part is based on a sample of 159 subs. of Western MNCs located in Finland and China. The results imply that acquisitions may enable greater outward transfer to the rest of the MNC than greenfield investments. There are also more results reported.
