Abstract: | It is herein questioned: How is performance impacted by the MNE's level of intra- and inter-regional diversification (henceforth as: divfn.) vs. the total level of geographic divfn.? Based on data from 123 U.S.-based MNEs over a 7-year period and leveraging both sales-based and subsidiary-based measures for divfn., it is found that performance increases at an increasingly higher rate with firms concentrating more heavily on intra-regional divfn. Regarding inter-regional divfn. and total geographic divfn., there are found inverted-U relationships to exist btw. firm performance and the level of geographic divfn. The robustness checks indicate no evidence of a sigmoidal relationship btw. the degree of regional divfn. and performance. |
