Abstract:On the eve of the First World War, Austria-Hungary ranked among the leading machinery producers of the world, surpassed only by the United States, Britain and Germany. Yet despite the interest in Habsburg economic history, little attention has focused on this country's capital goods sector. However, industrialization may be viewed as a process of increasing utilization of fixed capital over time. The machine-building industry is, then, a key sector because its "output constitutes replacement of or additions to the economy's stock of physical capital."
