Abstract:The car hire industry, always highly sensitive to the vagaries of the national economy, went through something of a maelstorm in the early 1990s. However, with steady, if modest, growth now re-established in the UK economy as a whole, the car hire industry has emerged into brighter times. Moreover, like many bitten by the recession, there is a determination by those in the industry not to repeat past mistakes. Car rental companies normally hire out their cars according to engine size and vehicle specification. In this way vehicles are typically allocated to one of ten categories - a doubling of the five or so categories just a few years ago. These categories tend to be similar between hire companies, although the prices charged, if not the services offered, vary considerably according to the operators' marketing strategies.
