Abstract:For the past two months, businessmen and politicians in the Pakistani capital have been absorbed by an unusual exchange of letters -- some leaked to the local press -- between Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's financial adviser and the International Monetary Fund. A great deal hangs on the outcome of the correspondence. With Pakistan's economy in a deep crisis, the adviser, V.A. Jaffrey, has been asking the IMF to renew a $600-million stand-by loan that the Fund suspended in May.
