Abstract:It was observed by Ronstadt that R&D laboratories in foreing subsidiaries of American multinationals follow an evolutionary pattern of development. Initially, these laboratories adapt foreign technology to the local conditions and local raw materials. Later, laboratories focus their attention on obtaining product quality. Finally, these R&D units generate new technology of a long-term or exploratory nature for the corporate parent. This paper uses this theoretical background and studies the evolution of R&D investments in Brazilian polymer companies.
