Abstract:Operating internationally requires managing the tension of global standardization versus local responsiveness. USA multinational companies (MNCs), as seen from the view of their European regional headquarters, manage this task by mediating the tension between rationality prescribed by the formal structure and the dialectic rationality enacted by the informal substructure. This task ultimately reduces to developing coherence between processes of centralization, formalization, and enculturation, a task well suited for the matrix mentality of regional management. In spite of calls for integration and synthesis, rsearch of organization in the MNC views either formal or informal aspects of structure.
