Abstract:Principals exercising favouritism (hereafter as: ftsm.) towards certain agents may harm those not so favoured. This study explores the issue in the context of a natural experiment from English soccer. The effects of professional referees is studied on a common measure of referee bias: length of injury time in close matches. It is found that referees exercised a degree of ftsm. prior to professionalism but not afterwards, having controlled for selection and soccer-wide effects.
