Abstract:This paper explores the diffusion of environmental management (hereafter as: env-mgmt.) initiatives in business and the motives and pressures reported by senior executives in adopting these practices (herein as: prtcs.) in the professional sports industry. The sustainable prcts. are framed under corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the causal drivers of environmental behaviour are examined based on a mixed-methods approach and using a survey and 17 in-depth interviews with professional sports team and league executives. There are found both strategic and legitimacy motives to adopt env-mgmt. prcts. It is suggested that strategic motives are the primary reason for adopting an environmental CSR focus.
