Abstract:Poland needs to create large, internationally competitive banks to serve a burgeoning industrial sector. Poland, the largest post-communist country west of the former Soviet border , holds the same view about banking as some of its smaller post-communist neighbours to the south. In the five years since Poland embarked upon the transition to a market-based economy, it has generated too few large, financially strong, internationally competitive banks and too long a tail of small, financially weak banks.
