| Abstract: | Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is a little-known USA government agency that promotes - and backs - business deals in Third World countries. Now OPIC is expanding to support Polish and Hungarian investment. As international trade and investment grow in importance, OPIC is an increasingly useful means to bridge the gap between public policy makers and the private sector. It is one of the world's largest vendors of political risk insurance; the catalyst for billions of dollars' worth of USA investments in over 100 developing countries; and a major informational resource. American businesses have found OPIC a cost-effective mediator. Some of its typical missions are reported. |
