Abstract:The British Government about to impose new regulationson on the check-off of trade unionists' membership contributions gave an opportunity to examine the subject Europe-wide. In a survey of 17 countries it was found that: there is a wide variation between and within countries in the level of membership contributions; the check-off is the most common method of collection (though direct payments through bank accounts are on the increase); and check-off arrangements are regulated by varying combinations of custom and practice, collective agreements and specific and general legislation.
