Abstract:In management development the concept of "learning style" is taken for granted, in spite of doubts about its validity from within education and cognitive psychology. This paper summarizes critical research of learning styles, particularly in the form predominating within management development and introduces the alternative concept of learning strategy. The paper develops a critique of learning style theory from a critical education perspective. The critique is intended to demonstrate the way that drawing on both conventional and humanistic psychology in their development has reinforced a perspective on learning which is both individualized and decontextualized. There is concern at all levels of education that this perspective perpetuates social inequality.
