Abstract:Breakfast cereals have shown steady growth in the last few years with sales increasing by 8% in volume terms between 1992-1996. The market has proved immune to the recession, growing by 17% in value terms. It has driven by constant new product innovation and masive advertising and promotional support. The UK is virtually self-sufficient in breakfast cereals with imports accounting for just 3.7% of domestic consumption in 1994. Export sales are extremely dynamic. Below-the-line promotional activity plays an important role in the cereals sector. Retail prices in the cereals sector increased by only 4% between 1993-1997.
