Abstract: | Across much of the developed world, there is not much evidence of a recovery of union membership, in spite of increased investment in organizing (here as: org-g.) by unions. This study deals with the barriers to successful union org-g. In order to identify the internal and external constraints (here as: cntrs.) encountered while working on org-g. campaigns, survey and interview data from trainee organisers in Britain are used. Based on the findings, a broad range of org-g. cntrs. both within and beyond trade unions are found. Experience of cntrs. varies and is shown partly to be a function of the characteristics of organizers, the nature of the org-g. task etc. |
