| Abstract: | With growing deficits and entrenched inflation, Turkey's economy has long looked precarious. The crisis finally arrived this year. Strong corrective action is promised but many remain unconvinced. Prime minister Tansu Ciller announced the accelerated privatisation or closure of state economic enterprises , a wage freeze, price rises up to 100% on basic goods and services, one-off tax levies and a reform of agricultural subsidies. The package means further sacrifices and widespread unemployment in the state sector. |
