Abstract:The article reviews two conflicting arguments concerning meritocracy today, 'meritocracy as functional imperative' (MFI) derived from the American liberal tradition, and 'market versus meritocracy' (MVM) that derives from the European liberal tradition. MFI sees meritocracy as essential to technological and economic dynamism of societies, while MVM seems it as incompatible with the principles of a free-market economy and liberal democracy. These arguments are examined in the context of Hungary, for which extensive high-quality survey data exists, and its transition from socialism into liberal capitalism.
