Abstract:Based on a multiple case study of seven manufacturing companies and by using the business model concept, this paper links managerial activities to a service innovation framework to underline how companies can best take advantage of a new service-based business model (herein as: b-m/s). It is indicated that there is the need for companies to focus on all areas of their b-m/s. in a holistic fashion. Among others, companies have to develop their abilities to build relationships with customers, to visualize the intangible value of their service offerings, and to advance a dynamic service offering portfolio which can adapt to changes in customer needs.
