Abstract:An important subject which needs to be taught effectively in business schools and on engineering degrees is innovation management. As one of the key topics, new product development (NPD) is complex and challenging to be taught. Management simulations are thought to provide a good mechanism for teaching practical and intricate topics, and so an NPD simulation was developed, the CityCar. Herein, described is the empirical research on how students' perceptions of NPD change with their completing the CityCar exercise. The four 1-day teaching sessions were conducted in the United Kingdom (two sessions), in Germany and in Italy (one session in each of the latter countries). In general, simulations are shown to have significant potential in teaching NPD. The students' perception changes provide evidence that the CityCar exercise achieves its intended learning outcomes in showing the importance of commercial and technical knowledge and the need for a disciplined NPD management process.
