Abstract:The paper surveys the recent political economy literature on the size distribution of nations. The main themes are: 1) The spread democracy leads to the creation of too many sovereign states, 2) The extent of factor mobility has a key role in determining the incentives towards separation or integration, 3) Economic integration through the development of international trade may require greater political integration. At the same time, economic integration increases the incentives to political separation.
