Abstract:In this study, provided is a framework decomposing aggregate total factor productivity (TFP) into i. a component reflecting relative efficiency (here as: rel-eff.) across sectors, and ii. a component reflecting the absolute level of efficiency. It is suggested, based on a development accounting analysis, that 85 percent of the international variation in aggregate TFP can be attributed to variation in rel-eff. Estimation results show that research findings highlighting the importance of strong protection of property rights, financial development and geographical advantage for the level of TFP, can be explained by their impact on rel-eff.
