| Abstract: | Zurich has been the banking centre of the world for generations. What is in store for Switzerland now that Brussels is fast becoming the economic capital of Europe? The accomplishments of the Swiss economy during the last ten years are assessed. The reasons of the absence of Switzerland from the European Community are explained. The EFTA alternative is investigated. There is an almost unanimous recognition that it will be more and more difficult for Swiss businesses to compete against their EC counterparts as progress continues toward the homogenization of that large community. It is shown how Swiss businesses plan to survive. The insurance business is examined. Environmental issues are considered. |
