Abstract:This study explores how participants in triathlon (here as: trhn.) learn to physically manage, socially perform and individually reflect on the endurance sport of trhn. as a microcosm of the 'civilising process'. Elias's particular conceptualization of habitus is centrally utilised to explain why more Canadian middle class men and women quest for 'exciting significance' through endurance sports like trhn. Analyzed are narratives which were gathered from 62 participants in Canadian trhn. with alongside collected ethnographic data during a 3-year period in Ontario, Canada. Especially is explored how triathletes come together as a mutually recognized 'pain community' of like-minded actors, and how they learn to deal with suffering in the sport.
