Abstract:Every four years, all Belgian companies employing 50 or more workers must conduct "social elections" for worker representatives on health and safety committees and, in companies with 100 or more employees, for representatives on works councils. The authors look at the results of the 1995 elections, and at the importance of this major trial of strength for the trade unions. Company-level worker representation in Belgium involves three separate structures - works councils, health and safety committees and trade union delegations.
