Abstract:Determined that Belgium should be among the first wave of countries to form European economic and monetary union, the government has taken stringent budgetary measures to meet the convergence requirements. The arrival EMU and the single European currency, the euro, is equally strongly supported by the banking community. As a small country in the centre of Europe dependent on its international role, Belgium has much to gain from being among the leaders. In the short term, however, there will be costs both for the economy and for the vital banking sector.
