Abstract: | This article tries to understand the importance of cultural mediators in informing consumers of culture in the age of Internet. The focus is on book readers from the Netherlands and Flanders and their views on Internet reviewers, experts and peers. The article debates whether systems of value attribution are becoming less hierarchical in Western societies, and in the case of omnivorous book readers it seems to be true. Broader taste and needs of information lead to acceptance of a wider array of institutions and higher ratings of all types of critics. |
