Abstract:The role of hypermarkets in the Belgian retailing is discussed. Hypermarket development and the present situation is summarized. An estimation is presented about the total size of this channel. Statistics are showing the total number of self-service grocery outlets, and outlets by region. Hypermarket location is examined. Data are presented about sales area. The share of retail trade is analyzed. Sales turnover is much faster in the food metrage than in the non-foods sales area. Hypermarket groups are listed and described, and the number of outlets is presented.
