Abstract:Tourism is Britain's fourth largest industry. How can the British reconcile 36bn pounds in revenue with the harm done to their heritage? "This is the modern madness which we need to control. The situation is becoming serious - the sheer number of tourists coming on a 20-minute dash in and out is something we do not want. It is not tourism, nor is it educational." So says Chris Green, chief executive of English Heritage, describing the visitors rushing through Dover Castle. There is no shortage of examples.
