Abstract:A glance at the figures for the illegal drugs industry in the UK shows a sector that is booming. According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK spends up to 10 billion GBP on illegal drugs every year - almost as much as the legitimate wine and spirit trade's 12 billion GBP. In other words, drugs account for more than 2% of total consumer spending, and the figure looks set to rise: heroin use is currently growing at the rate of 20% a year in the UK, and this is mirrored around the world.
