Abstract:This article explores the changes in the risks of involuntary job loss in France from1982 to 2002. The risks are found to be higher in the 1990s than in the 1980s. Using an econometric analysis the effects of institutional changes are segregated from the effects of new technologies. The results indicate that the rise in job loss rates is more visible in the industries with the largest amount of R&D workers and the largest rate of new technologies' users. Finally, it is argued that there is no longer a need to keep workers for a long period of time and job security decreases.
