Abstract:This theoretical and empirical analysis deals with the impact of human resource management flexibility on the type of investment being attracted by multinational companies. In a context of British-German comparison, the study derives hypotheses from a real options framework and tests them with survey data on American multinational companies with manufacturing subsidiaries in Germany and Britain. In line with the hypotheses derived from the real options framework, the results of the study reveal systematic differences between German and British subsidiaries. The findings indicate that German subsidiaries invest much more in research and development than the British ones, and German subsidiaries also experience a stronger technological uncertainty.
