Abstract:In rethinking political economy the authors examine the essential elements: an assumptive base, research methods, and current changes. Political economy's grounding in history, moral philosophy, social totality and praxis orients researchers to the study of social change through economic restructuring. The integration of historical, social, and analytic methods provides tools to uncover and explain structural continuity and structural change. The best research in political economy generally, and in the political economy of communications specifically, has always involved bold theorizing held in check by careful research and cautious analysis.
