Abstract:It has been found that in the early stage of economic growth the pressure of environmental quality increases faster than income. Later, the pressure slows down due to GDP growth in higher income levels. This inverted-U-shaped development is called the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). Reviewing studies that have found empirical evidence for the EKC hypothesis this article discusses the history and conceptual background of EKC, methods used, explanations and policy implications.
