Abstract:The characteristics of the Internet as channel for 2 categories of homogeneous products, that is books and CDs, are empirically analyzed. Using a data set of over 8,500 price observations collected over a period of 15 months, pricing behaviour at 41 Internet and conventional retail outlets is compared. It is found that prices on the Internet are from 9 to 16 percent lower than prices in conventional outlets. Additionally, it is found that Internet retailers' price adjustments over time are up to 100 times smaller than conventional retailers' price adjustments.
