Abstract: | This paper aims at making contribution to the debate of how different types societies allocate occupational positions. Modern economies need that the important high-level positions are allocated according to meritocratic principles, suggests one theory. The study uses a data set of 5000 job advertisements in British newspapers. A content analysis indicates that both merit and non-merit characteristics are desired by employers for all types of occupations. |
