Abstract:The purpose of this article is to study the research productivity of economics and finance faculties in the last 30 years. The authors examine all faculties that have been affiliated with the top 25 universities of the world. The results reveal that there existed a positive effect of connections with top universities on productivity in 1970's. This effect weakened in 1980's and in 1990's it didn't exist anymore. This can be explained by the fact that face-to-face communication is not that important anymore since the innovations in communication industry. Still, elite universities enjoy the highest average productivity rates.
