Abstract:The market of video media in the UK is overviewed, comprising pre-recorded, blank video cassettes and their rental. Only standard compact cassettes are considered. In 1990, total spending on video software purchase and rental topped GBP 1 billion. Pre-recorded videos for purchase made up 11 percent of the market in 1986, but by 1990 had reached 36 percent. Blank video cassettes continued to decline in value as prices fell further. Ironically, this sector will benefit from the growth of cable and satellite TV. The video rental market is entering a phase of intense competition. Video tape market, sources of supply, market sectors, consumer profile, brands and manufacturers, retailing and outlook are discussed and supported by tables.
